A Woman Is … Faithful

The heart of a woman is universal. A supporter who visited Plant With Purpose’s program in Haiti once shared, “It was amazing to hear the women pray. They were praying for the same things I pray for at home: for her children to be safe, to make wise decisions, to do well in school. Despite living in different countries, we’re not so different after all.”
Today we’re starting a series called, “A Woman Is…” focusing on the character qualities that women around the world exhibit. Plant With Purpose’s program is empowering women to invest in their families, communities, and countries. Read on to see how Eritane exemplifies faithfulness in Haiti.
Proverbs 31 says it well as it depicts what it looks like to be a strong and faithful woman of the Lord:
“She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future. When she speaks her words are wise, and she gives instructions with kindness. She carefully watches everything in her household and suffers nothing from laziness.”
For women in Haiti, to embody this Proverb takes great faith. Where health, education, and transportation exist as some of the biggest challenges, many women face uncertainty as they try to carry out normal needs in their day-to-day lives. For women in Haiti, water is often not less than a forty-minute walk away, education is an uncommon opportunity, and childbirth comes at a life-threatening cost. The recent devastating drought and continued deforestation are causing severe hunger and poverty further leading to mothers, especially those with large families, without the resources to feed their families.
Eritane Jean Baptiste, as a mother of seven, truly embodies Proverb 31 as she boldly puts her faith in God for her strength and wisdom. Although she is a mother, she has accomplished much more than the great feat of raising up her children. This woman walks with humility as she recognizes it is the Lord who has empowered her to walk such a journey. Eritane is not one to choose the simple path; she has persevered with God by her side to expand her farm and restore the once-degraded environment. She has taken great strides to bring life back to her land, through re-planting more trees and strategically using compost that she makes herself in lieu of chemical fertilizers. She also has taken the initiative to join her communities’ VSLA group, which she felt inspired to do after hearing testimonies of those already a part of it. With the wisdom gained from her focus on God, this noble wife, mother, and farmer truly can laugh without fear of the future. She knows that He is with her in all of her endeavors, “He protects me wherever I go and wherever I am—at home, riding my motorcycle, or at the market, he protects me and my family.”
A woman of faith is one like Eritane; one who has faith to pursue even the seemingly scary, difficult, or nearly impossible in Haiti, a place where life can be full of uncertainty. In your own seasons of uncertainty or trial, be encouraged by Eritane, who remains a powerful example for women everywhere of a woman clothed in strength and dignity.
Participation in Plant With Purpose’s program is attractive to women. Savings-and-loan groups offer community. Farmer Field Schools are improving family farms often cultivated by women. Bible studies foster connections. In fact, 67 percent of program participants are women.
