Bike It Out

I know…it’s been a difficult week. You’re stressed about work, or maybe it is the ever-declining population of bees (this keeps me up at night). Is that perpetual cold still getting you?
What if I told you I have a fix? Now you are thinking, “Not another one of those articles.” But trust me, there is a solution, and that solution has two wheels. If you’re like me, it has a little bell, basket, and streamers. You guessed it, it’s a bike!
Biking often improves mental as well as physical health. A nice ride will keep your adrenaline and cortisol in check, and help you feel less anxious and recover from stressful situations more quickly. Rethinking your mode of transportation might be all that’s needed to curb the day’s stress. After that big board meeting or presentation, a ride home can help you unwind.
If you have ever seen an avid biker, you will believe that biking has physical benefits. Would you believe it also boosts immunity, and can even give you energy? My favorite part about riding my bike is that it gets you off the couch, even out of the gym, and takes you outside.
Any exercise can increase endorphins, but biking can be your exercise and your mode of transport. Commuting to work, running errands, or making a stop at the coffee shop can be a killer workout. And if you are looking to impress your friends, don’t worry, biking is totally trending right now with designated bike lanes popping up all over.
But don’t think about yourself, think about the others. Biking uses no fuel and emits no gases. Make this your contribution to fighting environmental pollution. If we all decided to ditch our cars and bike, we would see a 42 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, this would have a tremendous impact on the health of our planet.
The time is now. Not yesterday, not tomorrow, and certainly not in a month because guess what? May is National Bike Month! This week is National Bike to Work Week. Join thousands across the country who are committing to breaking out the two-wheelers this week. Your mind, body, and soul will thank you, and the earth will thank you too.
