Celebrate Earth Day This Weekend

April 22 marks the 45 anniversary of Earth Day. According to Earth Day Network, what happened in 1970 was monumental:

20 million Americans took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment in massive coast-to-coast rallies. Thousands of colleges and universities organized protests against the deterioration of the environment. Groups that had been fighting against oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, freeways, the loss of wilderness, and the extinction of wildlife suddenly realized they shared common values.

Earth Day 1970 achieved a rare political alignment, enlisting support from Republicans and Democrats, rich and poor, city slickers and farmers, tycoons and labor leaders. The first Earth Day led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts.

Environmental restoration is core to the work of Plant With Purpose. By planting trees, restoring watersheds, and using organic farming methods, partnering farming families are stewarding creation. And we know that restored land means restored lives.

This month, we look forward to participating in a number of Earth Day festivities around San Diego. We promise to have inspiring stories from the field and new merchandise. Don’t miss out on coffee from Thailand, updated Plant With Purpose t-shirts, Madres jewelry from the Dominican Republic, and Root 7 tumblers.

For those of you not in San Diego, take part in a local Earth Day celebration. If you’re in Washington, DC, check out the Global Citizen 2015 Earth Day. Or plant some trees through our Root 7 campaign.
