Celebrating Women Across the World

Happy Women’s Equality Day! August 26 commemorates the passage of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, which gave women the right to vote. It celebrates continued steps toward a world where women and men receive equal opportunities, and it reminds us that there is still work to do.
Plant With Purpose is privileged to partner with thousands of innovative, dedicated, resilient women across the world. These women are working hard to change their circumstances through our three-part approach to transformation. In honor of Women’s Equality Day, here’s a snapshot of the ways women are building brighter futures.
In East Africa, women make up more than half the rural workforce but lack access to the same resources as men. In fact, female farmers receive just five percent of agricultural extension services around the world. Plant With Purpose believes that women can alleviate hunger in their communities and create greater food security in the developing world. The female farmers we partner with in Tanzania and Burundi establish backyard gardens to feed their families nutritious meals, earn an income, and send their kids to school.
In Mexico, Plant With Purpose trains women in handicraft and entrepreneurial skills. Through basket cooperatives, women learn to hand-weave pine needle baskets to sell at local markets. This basket cooperative is changing lives; because women are bringing home income, they are given more of a voice in the household. Because they rely on pine trees to make the baskets, they are teaching their communities to protect local forests. And because they are earning money, they can provide food for their families and education for their children.
In Thailand, Plant With Purpose works to secure land rights and citizenship for marginalized hill tribes. This human rights protection gives a voice to rural families and teaches them that all individuals are equal. When farming families receive land rights, they have greater incentive to care for their environment. Female partners across Thailand are leading the way in caring for community forests and tending to family farms.
On the border of Haiti and the Dominican Republic, a group of business savvy women created Madres Jewelry. This cooperative is made up of mothers who create custom jewelry to sell locally and internationally. These women save their earnings through Plant With Purpose’s Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs), which also teach financial management and entrepreneurial skills. The women of Madres are creating economic development in their communities.
