Director’s Corner

By Scott Sabin, Executive Director

As I reflect on the thirtieth anniversary of Plant With Purpose, there are many aspects I could choose to focus on: what God has accomplished through us, the many things we have learned, those lessons we should have learned sooner, the difficult times, the highlights, and the program’s transformative impact on so many lives. I was recently reading in the book of Chronicles about King David’s Mighty Men. This story reminded me of the many mighty men and women who have built Plant With Purpose.

As executive director, my name is the one people often associate with the organization but my role is small compared to so many others. Long before I ever felt God calling me to this work, people of vision recognized the link between poverty and deforestation and devised ways to address root causes. Tom Woodard, who founded both Plant With Purpose and our Dominican partner, Floresta Incorporada, responded to needs by courageously moving his family to the Dominican Republic. During these formative years he laid the foundation for everything that has happened since.

Felicita Rodriguez, or Estela, has been working with Plant With Purpose Dominican Republic for over twenty-five years. During her time she has witnessed communities grow from struggling villages to thriving communities, as a result of Estela’s leadership and the development of the culture of savings. She celebrates with individuals like Genara Cristina Adames who can now provide an education for herself and her children, due to her ability to save.

Read more about how God is blessing the work of Estela and Plant With Purpose in the Dominican Republic in transforming families and communities with the power of savings.

Although the civil war in Burundi ended over 9 years ago, communities are still recovering and learning how to reconcile their land and relationships.  Plant With Purpose has partnered with the community of Maramvya through community Village Savings and Loan Groups (VSLA), trainings on conflict resolution, and church studies.

Mother’s like Triphonie found reconciliation for her family through her participation in VSLA and has been following Christ’s example as a peacemaker in her community.
