Love recognizes no barriers. It jumps hurdles, leaps fences, penetrates walls to arrive at its destination full of hope. – Maya Angelou

HillaryHi, I’m Hillary. As I sit down to write my introduction, this quote from Maya Angelou lingers in my mind. In the few days I have been on staff with Plant With Purpose, I have been amazed by the restorative and transformational impact this organization is having around the world. It is an organization and a staff going into the world “full of hope” because of, and for, our First Love. I am overjoyed to be joining this team and supporting its mission through grant writing. My journey to this point has been purposed, and looking back, so much of what I’ve experienced has led me here.

Growing up in East County San Diego (Jamul, to be precise), I had an affinity for the outdoors and a yearning to explore the world, connect with people, and experience new cultures. Luckily, I was blessed with a family who encouraged and enabled me to explore Mexico, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, and many U.S. landmarks before I graduated from high school. I left home for college and moved to Washington, D.C. to attend The George Washington University where I studied Sociology, Peace Studies, and Religion. I took missions trips to Nicaragua, studied abroad in the Czech Republic, spent summers working at a Christian children’s camp, volunteered for multiple nonprofits, and learned from the diverse individuals I interacted with daily.

After graduating college during the worst economic recession since the Great Depression, I had no clue how I would translate my degree, experiences, or growing interest in human rights issues to the “real world.” I was lucky enough to land a development internship in the nonprofit sector, and from there, sort of fell into a career in fundraising. Since then, I have had the pleasure of writing grants, planning events, and connecting compassionate individuals to nonprofits across a wide range of issue areas, including: human trafficking, environmental security, global health, humanitarian relief, and arts education.

It was a love for God and people and a desire to see hope restored that led me to Plant With Purpose and back home to San Diego, and I couldn’t be more excited about this new adventure. Outside of work, I can be found playing with my seven nieces and nephews, running, checking out gluten-free restaurants, and traveling. I live each day led by love and full of hope, expectant of what God will do next.

I would love to connect with you. Follow me on twitter @hillrichards or email hillary@plantwithpurpose.org.
