Let the Competition Begin!

“We want to see water flowing in all the dried rivers and streams so as to restore the environment.”

Richard Mhina, Plant With Purpose Tanzania’s country director, has a big vision for his country. But he also has a strategy that is working.

Since 2012, Plant With Purpose Tanzania has planted over 1.5 million trees annually.

The strategy?

Three years ago Richard designed a group competition to spur on partnering farmers’ tree planting efforts. The competition continues to grow in design and scope, with more participants and trees planted every year. Group members have saturated their properties with trees, and our recent Impact Evaluation shows that Tanzania participants are planting 413 trees a year. The competition’s success sparked conversations with Kilimanjaro National Park and Plant With Purpose Tanzania is now working to reforest the famous mountain.

Tree planting competition winners celebrate at the organic agriculture festival this past January.
Will we be celebrating you next?

Inspired by Tanzania’s reforestation success, we decided to host a little competition of our own. Here’s where you come in. This month, we plan to increase the number of trees planted across our international programs through an online tree planting campaign.

In April, we’re officially launching our newest sponsorship program, Root 7. When you become a Root 7 member, your monthly donation of $7 will plant 7 trees in 7 countries (stay tuned in 2015 for an announcement about our seventh country program).

Get your friends to join Root 7 today!

To participate in the competition, encourage your friends to go to and join the movement. In the comment section, have them write your name as the source of how they heard about Root 7. Whoever inspires the greatest number of trees planted will be our competition winner! If you win, we will award you a Plant With Purpose prize pack including four stainless steel tumblers, a copy of Tending to Eden, a newly redesigned t-shirt, and 100 trees planted in your honor.
