Plant With Purpose Phraseology: What Are Fuel-Efficient Stoves?

Would you be surprised to learn that cookstoves cause more deaths than water pollution? What about the fact that they cause more deaths than malaria and AIDS combined?

It’s true. According to the Global Burden of Disease Study, fumes and smoke from open-fire cookstoves are the single greatest environmental health threat today, causing 3.5 million deaths each year.

Today, 3 billion people worldwide use these stoves daily—nearly half the earth’s population. Families in developing countries have little choice, though. They rely on open-fire stoves for cooking, boiling water, heat, and more. In response, Plant With Purpose partners with communities to provide clean stoves and to educate families about stove maintenance and benefits.

Partnering communities are now caring for their families by using fuel-efficient stoves in their homes. By burning only 50 percent as much wood as traditional stoves, not only do the fuel-efficient stoves produce less deadly smoke, but they also mean less wood being cut for fuel and more time for women to spend doing tasks besides walking for wood. 

Plant With Purpose clean stoves direct the smoke outside the kitchen, eliminating health problems caused by direct contact with fumes and smoke (normally experienced by mothers and children). Thanks to reduced smoke in the kitchen, families have a common area to gather and spend time in. Women in Tanzania have even noticed that their husbands join them more often in the kitchen, improving spousal relationships.

Fuel-efficient stoves serve as a key player in sustainable development by protecting the health of families and the environment. Plant With Purpose partnering communities are better able to care for themselves and the world they live in by making the switch to fuel-efficient stoves.
