“The Giver becomes the Gift, this quiet offering.
This heart beating in the chest cavity of a held child, a thrumming heart beating hope, beating change, bearing love, beating the singular song you’ve been waiting for—that the whole dizzy planet’s been spinning round waiting for.”
– Ann Voskamp, The Greatest Gift

This week marks the first week of Advent. Advent, meaning arrival, stems from the Latin word “coming.” During this season, Christians are invited to pause and accept, once again, the gift of Christ’s life that brings us full life. We are invited to wait for the quiet coming of a King.

Christ’s manger birth was unspectacular, and even today it’s easy to miss in the midst of holiday frenzy. So the quiet reflection that Advent brings is essential. It allows us to fully accept and celebrate the gift that makes us whole.

We invite you to join us in lifting up these praises and prayer requests to the Gift we celebrate at Christmas. Wishing you much peace and anticipation this month.

Burundi

We praise God for:

  • The good rains that have fallen on the country.
  • Growth of seedlings in Plant With Purpose’s tree nurseries. In some nurseries, twice the expected amount of seedlings have grown, which will allow partnering farmers to plant around 652,000 trees instead of 245,000 as planned.
  • Program Officer Christi Huizenga’s fruitful visit and strategic planning meeting with the staff and board.

We pray for:

  • The planning process in six regions where tree planting will take place. Pray for leaders to emerge who will inspire church and community involvement.
  • Upcoming trainings for church leaders in the Theology of Work curriculum. Pray that partnerships will develop with these churches focusing on environment restoration and care for creation.
  • Burundi’s political situation to remain stable and safe during the upcoming election year.
  • The process of creating our strategic plan for the next five years.

Dominican Republic

We praise God for:

  • The positive reception from communities in the central region and Hondo Valle to saving through Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs).
  • The enthusiasm shown as VSLA groups complete their savings-and-loan cycle.

We pray for:

  • God’s help and provision as Plant With Purpose DR sets to complete the activities outlined in the 2014 budget. Pray that these activities will impact many lives.
  • God’s protection over the VSLA groups as they end the current savings-and-loan cycle and savings are redistributed to group members. Pray that they would be kept safe and invest their money wisely.
  • Adequate rain for the growth of timber and fruit trees in the Ozama watershed region.

Haiti

We praise God for:

  • The rains that are watering partnering families’ crops.
  • Mrs. Paulette, our cook in Fonds Verrettes, who had a successful surgery after a car accident last month where she broke her left leg. Continue praying for her healing.

We pray for:

  • Deeper understanding and wisdom for Haitian farmers to adopt sustainable agricultural techniques.
  • The integration of VSLA groups in partnering communities, which will lead to their holistic development.

Mexico

We praise God for:

  • His faithfulness in 2014. We praise God for each donor who generously supported partnering families and extended grace to the staff and our families.
  • The establishment of an office in Los Altos de Chiapas and the work that was accomplished in this new state of Mexico.
  • The program achievements accomplished by partnering families and the team of promoters who helped make this possible.

We pray for:

  • The successful completion of year-end activities.
  • God to strengthen the community health promoters and their families.
  • The work being accomplished with children in all areas of influence including partnership with churches.
  • God’s grace and wisdom in the coming year as He guides us in this beautiful work.

Tanzania

We praise God for:

  • The blessing of rain in the Moshi Rural District, which allows for more tree planting.
  • The progress made in developing an updated strategic plan for the local program.
  • Program Officer Christi Huizenga’s visit and safety during her travels.

We pray for:

  • Preparations for a successful group competition and the culminating event that will take place on January 22, 2015.
  • Enough rainfall across all partnering districts to allow for a successful tree planting campaign from November 24-December 12.

  • Peace and harmony throughout the country as Tanzanians moves toward voting on a constitution draft in 2015.
  • Peace, love, and harmony for Plant With Purpose staff across all of the partnering countries.

Thailand

We praise God for:

  • The open doors as Plant With Purpose Thailand has the opportunity to conduct a holistic ministry workshop with fourth year seminary students in February. The students will participate in some practical experiences ministering to the Khamu people in Thailand and Laos.

We pray for:

  • God’s wisdom as Plant With Purpose Thailand continues to finalize their strategic plan.
  • The upcoming staff and family retreat taking place December 19-21.
  • Plant With Purpose Thailand and four Christian organizations as they plan a Christmas celebration with the Palaung people on the December 13-14. 1,000 people are expected to attend of which around 60 percent will be non-believers. Pray that God will open their hearts to accept Him as their Savior.
  • Program Officer Christi Huizenga’s upcoming visit and safety during traveling.
  • Continued growth for the new management team as they learn to become good leaders and represent Plant With Purpose Thailand well.
  • Preparations to expand Plant With Purpose Thailand’s ministry in Southeast Asia.
  • The political situation in Thailand and throughout Southeast Asia.

USA

We praise God for:

  • His provision in 2014 as Plant With Purpose invested in the lives of many rural farmers.
  • Generous donors who have provided the funds for our year-end campaign match.
  • Safe travels for Christi, Milmer, and Bob as they assisted with strategic planning in Haiti, Dominican Republic, Burundi, and Tanzania.

We pray for:

  • A financially strong finish to 2014 so country programs can meet their current goals and expand to help the needs of more families.
  • The finalization of strategic planning that has been taking place across the programs. Please pray for God’s guidance, wisdom, and direction as goals are set for the upcoming years. Pray also for upcoming program officer travels to Mexico and Thailand.
  • The right person to fill our staffing need as we look for a new Development Assistant.
  • The Evening Watch, an event taking place on December 6 in collaboration with Preemptive Love Coalition. Pray that those who attend will be inspired by the organizations and the work being accomplished.

Thank you so much for your prayers and support! We are deeply grateful for your partnership.
