“God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. … God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the parts that lacked it, so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.”
1 Corinthians 12:18, 25-26

A microcosm of God’s church family, Plant With Purpose is composed of many parts and each has their own purpose. As unrest and fear escalates in Burundi, we feel more distinctly than ever the need for each part to support each other. We feel with our team members who are hurting in Burundi and rejoice that local staff members assist one another with resources and prayer. The latest update from Burundi indicates that national elections are pushed back to later this summer. Please join us as we lift up Burundi and the entire Plant With Purpose international body in prayer. Ask God that each part would live up to its potential and role, and that we can learn to suffer and rejoice with each other.

Burundi

We praise God for:

  • “We highly praise the Lord for His mercy so far and trust Him to go on protecting us. WITH HIM LIFE IS SAFE.” – Noé Nizigama, country director
  • The mutual concern and support of our staff and their strong determination to keep the program running. During breaks in protests, staff in the capital city of Bujumbura acquired fuel for staff in the rural Rutana region. The team in Rutana is helping with other supplies for the team in Bujumbura.

We pray for:

  • The safety of the staff in the midst of risky situations while traveling in Bujumbura and throughout the country. Three staff members live in neighborhoods affected by protests.
  • The political leaders to come to an understanding allowing for safe elections.
  • A stop to the violence, killings, grenades, cars burnings, and unrest.
  • God to provide a miraculous way out of this situation, as it seems there is none.
  • Plant With Purpose’s work that is continuing in rural Burundi. Despite the current situation, savings-and-loan groups are meeting and tree nurseries are being established.
  • Peace for families who are facing tough decisions as many flee the country, cope with uncertainty, and work to meet basic needs.
  • Emmanuel, our Rutana program officer, as he leads the regional team with little support from the main office. Please pray for this team as they continue working with partnering communities.

Dominican Republic

We praise God for:

  • The successful completion of program goals at the end the fiscal year.
  • The completion of an institutional evaluation to help standardize common operations practices across the Plant With Purpose family of organizations.
  • The adoption of grafting techniques by partnering farmers in the Ozama, Yuna, and Maimon watersheds.

We pray for:

  • The new communities of El Siete and Pepe Pérez in the Ozama watershed to be receptive to launching Village Savings and Loan Associations.
  • Workshops on the church’s role in creation care and the preservation of the environment taking place this month.
  • The communities of Hondo Valle and Juan Santiago to implement what they learned in a microenterprise workshop on the production of detergents.
  • Wisdom and guidance for Daniel Montero, the new spiritual renewal coordinator for the Hondo Valle region along the border of the Dominican Republic and Haiti.

Haiti

We praise God for:

  • The satisfaction of partnering farmers in Fonds-Verrettes with the Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) program especially as they experience the payout of their first cycle.
  • The harmony and cohesion amongst staff in Fonds-Verrettes.

We pray for:

  • The rainy season to start soon in Fonds-Verrettes as farmers are worried about the lack of rain and the long dry period. Crops and livestock have been lost because of the dry conditions.
  • God’s help so the staff can have a successful and strong finish to the fiscal year.

Mexico

We praise God for:

  • The rains that started falling this quarter, which benefit forests, crops, and farming families.
  • Increasing interest amongst partnering communities in environmental care including the importance of tree nurseries and reforestation efforts.
  • Partnering families in the communities of Los Altos, Chiapas who expressed their gratitude to the Lord for their harvest with a first fruit celebration at local churches.
  • Program Officer Milmer Martinez’s safe and productive trip to Oaxaca and Chiapas.

We pray for:

  • Elections taking place on June 7 which will determine 500 federal deputies, 17 state-level legislatures, 9 governors, and more than 300 mayors. Please pray for peaceful elections.
  • Wisdom and guidance for the new approach to holistically restore watersheds by partnering with strategic communities.
  • The successful completion of program goals as the fiscal year concludes.

Tanzania

We praise God for:

  • A successful and safe visit for Plant With Purpose Executive Director Scott Sabin and Program Officer Christi Huizenga.
  • The good weather that is favorable for tree planting and growth of crops.

We pray for:

  • Peace, unity, and a strong finish of program goals at the end of the fiscal year.
  • More rain and favorable conditions for tree planting especially in the Siha District, which is currently dry.
  • The addition of new VSLA groups as we work to reach the goals set for the 2015 fiscal year.
  • The collection of data to report on annual accomplishments. Please pray for the necessary energy to complete the report in a timely manner.
  • God to bring the right people to fill the staff roles of finance manager and economic empowerment manager.
  • Reestablishment of peace and stabilization in Burundi so refugees in Tanzania camps can return home and so God’s work through Plant With Purpose can move forward.

Thailand

We praise God for:

  • A successful training for 11 church leaders on holistic ministry at Payao Bible Seminary.

We pray for:

  • Communities in the Prao District that are being affected by the situation with the forestry department, which is trying to take back land from villagers. Please pray for the community members and Plant With Purpose as negotiations take place.
  • Training for farmers from six villages in the Huay Lu watershed on tree propagation and nursery management.
  • The development of a training curriculum for seminary students on holistic ministry.
  • The weather in northern Thailand. Please pray for more rain allowing for favorable conditions for farming and planting trees.

USA

We praise God for:

  • The addition of staff member Donna Lebert as executive assistant to our San Diego team.
  • Successful trips to Tanzania, Haiti, and Mexico for our technical, executive, and program teams.
  • Our supporters and donors who have led the way with our Plant For Tomorrow expansion campaign. It has been a huge success thus far.

We pray for:

  • Wisdom in finding the right people to fill current staffing needs including grant writer and finance assistant.
  • The exploration and groundwork being conducted that will launch a new program in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
  • U.S. team member’s upcoming trips to Chicago and Denver. Pray also for restful and rejuvenating time away with family for staff members on summer vacations.
  • The Plant For Tomorrow campaign as we reach new donors and supporters to financially support the work of Plant With Purpose.

Thank you so much for your prayers and support! We are deeply grateful for your partnership.
