Would you join Plant With Purpose’s international family in lifting up these praises and prayer requests on the first Friday of the month?

Elections are a big theme of the prayer requests across the world this month. There are upcoming elections in Haiti, Tanzania, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. We continue to pray for Burundi as security in the country remains unstable following their recent elections. We pray for peace and wisdom in this moment of transition.

Around the world we pause to give thanks to God as we marvel in the abundance of creation. Rain is breaking a long stretch of drought in Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and Haiti. Farmers are rejoicing! We eagerly anticipate rain in East Africa.

Burundi

We praise God for:

  • His protection of our staff and communities. Despite the critical security situation in Burundi, Plant With Purpose was able to successfully hold many meetings in various parts of the country.
  • Being able to hold a general staff meeting and 2-day seminar on savings-group reporting systems.
  • The successful 4-day “Theology of Work” seminar with churches in Makamba province.

We pray for:

  • Peace in Burundi. The political situation remains stressful. There have been many killings, arrests, and fires. This weekend a supermarket was burned and everything was lost. Please continue praying for peace.
  • People to change their minds and refrain from burning the forest and mountainsides in areas surrounding partnering communities. More than 30,000 recently planted young trees were burned.
  • Good germination in our tree nurseries. Partners plan on preparing around 700,000 trees to plant next quarter for the ongoing fight to reverse deforestation and restore the land in Burundi. Pray for endurance and wisdom for staff and communities.

Democratic Republic of the Congo

We praise God for

  • A successful Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) training event with the team from Tanzania. The team was well received in our communities and everyone learned a lot. Ten groups are already saving after receiving initial instruction. Praise God for the Tanzania team’s successful journey back home.
  • The successful healing of the EMI (Plant With Purpose local partners) director who was sick.
  • The success that has been encountered as we carry out the activities needed to launch the program in the Kakumba Watershed.
  • The new position former Program Officer Christi was hired for at Plant With Purpose.

We pray for:

  • The construction of the new office building. It is being built on a remote piece of land far from any cities or roads.
  • The orientation on spiritual renewal that will begin soon.
  • A day of remembrance on October 4. In 2011, four EMI staff members were killed. Please join Plant With Purpose partners in remembering these fellow team members and praying for their orphans and widows.
  • Plant With Purpose activities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Dominican Republic

We praise God for:

  • The birth of a child on September 15 that brought the population of the Dominican Republic to 10 million people. Praise God for this moment of growth as a nation.
  • Ample rain that helped replenish water in areas that have suffered for more than a year from drought.
  • The warm welcome from VSLA groups in the communities of El Ocho de Caballero, Guachupita, La Guásuma, and La Gina.

We pray for:

  • The community of La Gina in the Ozama Watershed to be receptive of savings-groups and the training they receive.
  • The community of Los Pinos in La Descubiera. They have been suffering through a long drought. Please pray for enough rain to support the bean crop that farmers hope to plant.

Haiti

We praise God for:

  • Rain in Fonds-Verrettes after a long period of drought.
  • The successful planting of trees in partnering communities after recent rains. These trees are healthy and growing.
  • Protecting director Guy Paraison after being held up while in the Delmas area.

We pray for:

  • Mrs. Paulette, our cook in Fonds-Verrettes, who is scheduled for a surgery at the end of the month. Please pray for the surgery to be successful and for her recovery.
  • The upcoming elections. Please pray for a peaceful process building up to the election and following the outcome. 6,410 state representatives will be elected at all levels across the country.

Mexico

We praise God for:

  • His care and provision as members of the Plant With Purpose Mexico and USA teams traveled to various communities in Oaxaca and Chiapas.
  • The successful construction of rainwater cisterns in Tamazola. May God bless and strengthen the members of this community.

We pray for:

  • The construction of five rainwater cisterns in the community of San José del Carmen in Los Altos de Chiapas.
  • The health of the promoter team. Please pray for strength and wisdom as they go about their daily tasks.
  • The upcoming Festival of Values and environmental education programs with schools in Oaxaca.

Tanzania

We praise God for:

  • His mercy and protection for Richard and Alice who traveled to the Democratic Republic of the Congo to train the new team on VSLA methodology and the integration of agroecology practices within the platform of the VSLA groups.
  • Good health among the staff as they continue to work with partnering communities.
  • The successful recovery of a team member from malaria.

We pray for:

  • The preparation of quarterly reports and performance evaluations. Please pray that this will be a time of rejoicing and celebration instead of a situation for stress.
  • Continued peace and harmony in Tanzania in the midst of the upcoming election scheduled for October 25.
  • Enough rainfall during the upcoming rainy season. Please pray for healthy, productive farms and a successful tree-planting season.

Thailand

We praise God for:

  • The fruitful prayer meeting held with Christian churches from three districts of northern Thailand. Continue praying for unity among the Christian community, the current political environment, and the development needs within the surrounding community.
  • A successful meeting of village volunteers from partnering communities. Conversations about forest and land management within the larger context of justice and human rights were discussed.
  • The successful workshop for community leaders and farmers on sustainable farming. Key leaders were trained on soil conservation, agroforestry, and water management.

We pray for:

  • Plant With Purpose is hosting a youth camp on October 14-16 with the opportunity to speak about creation care and God’s care for people and the environment.
  • The upcoming conference in partnership with ECHO Asia. Plant With Purpose is running three workshops on creation care and community development, backyard agriculture, and promoting agroforestry with communities.
  • The staff and family retreat being held October 22-24.
  • Plant With Purpose USA’s Director of Field Operations visit to Thailand on October 12-16.

USA

We praise God for:

  • The hire of a new director of development and marketing.
  • The new team of interns joining us this semester. Praise God for their eagerness to engage, learn, and help where needed.
  • The support received from friends and supporters leading up to the Planting Hope Gala.

We pray for:

  • The Planting Hope Gala on October 3. Pray for generosity, programming, and that partnering families would be honored through the stories of transformation shared.
  • Wisdom in filling the current staffing need of program officer for Africa and a regional representative in the San Francisco Bay area.

Thank you so much for your prayers and support! We are deeply grateful for your partnership.
