At the peak of California’s drought, our San Diego staff is reminded of the necessity of rain. For our partnering communities, rain is the essential element to yield a good harvest. Yet even in dry seasons, our farmers exhibit steadfast trust in the Lord’s provision. James encourages all followers of Christ to show a similar patience in suffering:

Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains. You also, be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand. (James 5:7-8, ESV)

On the first Friday of every month, Plant With Purpose’s international family comes together to lift up our country programs in prayer. As we prayer over requests for rain and healthy crops, let’s remember that patience during dry spells is a witness to God’s provision for all our needs. Thank you for joining us!

Burundi

We praise God for:

  • The 50 Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) groups that launched in recent months. This rapid growth of VSLAs in Burundi is creating an excitement for saving. Pray that these community-based savings groups will provide financial security for families’ needs.

We pray for:

  • Wisdom and clarity with decisions being made to support the sudden expansion of the VSLA program. Pray that staff and volunteers will be equipped to handle the growth.
  • The continued conversations with Caritas, Action AID, and ASARECA as possible funding partners. Pray for financial resources to support the expanding program.
  • Peace in Burundi. There continue to be external threats that could upset the country’s stability. Pray also for the government as elections approach this spring.
  • The Ebola outbreak in Africa. A strand has been found in Congo, which borders Burundi.

Dominican Republic

We praise God for:

  • The success of VSLAs in 50 partnering communities as individuals change their spending habits and save for their futures. There are currently 81 Dominican savings groups with 2,500 members.

We pray for:

  • Increased enthusiasm for community leaders to share the Gospel during weekly savings group meetings. Pray participants will be open to this message of hope.
  • Discipline for savings groups and individuals in following the lessons taught by Floresta.
  • Short-term solutions for immediate needs identified by communities.
  • Partnering farmers as they plant new crops and manage existing ones. Pray for an increase in fruit and vegetable production.

Haiti

We praise God for:

  • The safe and fruitful visit by PCI Guatemala’s Country Director Pascale to Fonds-Verrettes.
  • The arrival of two healthy baby girls, one to our accountant Mrs. Béatrice and the second to a partnering family.
  • A positive start to a partnership between Plant With Purpose and the Episcopal Church.

We pray for:

  • Rain in Fonds-Verrettes as crops have been lost and farmers are waiting for rain to finish planting summer crops.
  • Greater cohesion and increased program comprehension among the staff.
  • The success of the partnership between Plant With Purpose and the Episcopal Church, and that all the goals will be achieved.

Mexico

We praise God for:

  • His presence with us as we reach out to communities. He has faithfully provided for all our needs.
  • The positive interest of community members as they participate in family garden projects in the region of Coatecas Altas.
  • His protection of the August Vision Trip group from the U.S. They were a blessing to the communities they visited.

We pray for:

  • God to send more rain as current crops desperately need the water.
  • The impact evaluation process. Pray that the Lord will give staff grace and wisdom as they learn from these assessments and further engage participating communities and families.
  • For continued guidance and wisdom as the program grows and spreads to new communities.
  • The projects, families, and communities in the state of Chiapas. Pray that the program expansion continues to develop successfully.

Tanzania

We praise God for:

  • A successful audit of partnering farmers’ produce, which allows them to use the East Africa Organic label. Pray that the label will provide access to larger markets and that it will be a blessing to the many families that have been farming organically for years.
  • Three new board members who will invest their time, gifts, and talents to the program over the next three years.
  • Program resources such as the Redemptive Agriculture study that are being adapted and used by other organizations in Tanzania.

We pray for:

  • Partnering farmers who are currently living off of last year’s harvest and savings because of the dry season. Pray for resilience among families and that savings from VSLAs will sustain them.
  • The trainings taking place this month as farming families have more available time since they are not working their fields.
  • A successful transition for the board of directors as old members step down and new board members join.
  • God’s wisdom in conversations about strategic planning to scale up the program.

Thailand

We praise God for:

  • The increased interest in Creation Care across Thailand. Plant With Purpose staff has written publications, translated resources, promoted conversation through social media, and hosted trainings for pastors and church leaders. Pray that the enthusiasm continues.

We pray for:

  • Tui as he travels to Burma. Pray for his safety and that he will be a blessing to fellow believers and pastors.
  • Continued opportunities to learn about Disaster Risk Reduction including best practices for natural resource management. A proposal for the Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in Japan will be presented in March 2015.
  • Stable and steady rain during the monsoon season that will allow crops and trees to grow.

USA

We praise God for:

  • Our Development Associate Jimmy Lee and his four years of outstanding service at Plant With Purpose. Pray for Jimmy as he heads to Ghana for two years with The Peace Corps.
  • A positive Vision Trip to Oaxaca in August and fruitful visits with communities.
  • The opportunity to participate in and plan the Student Justice Conference which will take place in San Diego in summer 2015.

We pray for:

  • The analysis of information collected for the 2014 Impact Evaluations.
  • The upcoming 30th Anniversary Planting Hope Gala. Pray that the details come together, that attendance will be strong, and that it will be a wonderful celebration of Plant With Purpose’s work.
  • Our fall interns as they join our team. Pray that they have a great experience serving Plant With Purpose.
  • Program Officer Christi Huizenga as she travels to Africa this month. Pray for her safety and wisdom for conversations that are ahead.

Thank you so much for your prayers and support! We are deeply grateful for your partnership.
