TAYLOR YOUNG – MARKETING AND OUTREACH
Something I find beautiful about the way God made His people is the intricate depth in which each of us are created with. Humans are much more than just faces or bodies or biology, but every human has a unique story that stems out of their own experiences. As I have grown older, I have become passionate about people, learning their stories, and how others’ stories have affected my own. Stories are meant to be heard, however unfortunately in this world, some of the stories that need to be heard are the ones most left in silence. This is one of the multiple reasons I was drawn to the marketing and outreach internship at Plant With Purpose.
I believe that the work done in this organization is significant because of the way it partners with rural communities in need to create lasting and sustainable change. When I traveled to countries including Haiti and Malawi to do missionary work, I left yearning to do something more to help the amazing people I met there. I grew a desire to see justice for these people, along with others across the world, who are limited by poverty. Because of these experiences, I feel very excited to be a part of an organization that strives to create more than temporary change.
Aside from my love of traveling and getting to know people, I am currently a student at the University of San Diego studying communications and, theology and religious studies. When I am not studying, you can find me on campus leading Bible studies and doing ministry through InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. On the weekends, I may be at an exotic restaurant trying something new with my friends, outside hiking and exploring new places, or at OB’s dog beach where I like to pretend I have a dog of my own. This summer, I feel blessed to not only learn about the people Plant With Purpose empowers and works alongside in developing countries, but to also have the special opportunity to help their stories be heard.
ANDREA VEGA – GRANT WRITING
Hi! My name is Andrea Vega and I just completed my first year as a Political Science and Public Relations double major at Boston University. As I was frantically googling summer internships that would take in a freshman like me, I came across Plant With Purpose and I am so incredibly excited to be a part of such a welcoming and dedicated team. I have been involved in nonprofit work for about a year now, tutoring low-income and first generation college students in Boston, and I can honestly say it has been the most fulfilling and eye opening experience for me. Although I have only been at Plant With Purpose for about a week, I can already tell this experience will also be one filled with growth and fulfillment.
I grew up in Tijuana, Mexico, a city just south of San Diego and although it is far from the site where Plant With Purpose Mexico is located, the fact that I am working for an organization that is aiding my home country in such an innovative and impactful way is very important to me. Although I am not sure what my career path will be after college, I am certain that I want to give back to the country that gave me so much, and interning at Plant With Purpose is my first step.
As this summer’s grant writing intern I am looking forward to getting to know more about Plant With Purpose and its work internationally as well as taking in as much information about the nonprofit career world as possible.
REGINA GUTIERREZ – MARKETING AND OUTREACH
Hello! My name is Regina Gutierrez and I am excited to be working as the marketing and outreach intern this summer at Plant With Purpose. I am a sociology major at the University of San Diego and I hope to have a career in the nonprofit sector after I graduate. I am excited to take on a new challenge and see what Plant With Purpose has planned for me this summer!
I have always believed that being born into a corrupt and troubled country like Mexico has greatly impacted the person I am today. Although I moved to San Diego at a young age and have lived in this city most of my life, Mexico’s people have always been an inspiration for me. I grew up appreciating every aspect of my life: clean water, my house, the food on the table, nature, and everything good that surrounds me. I learned to live a humble life, making note to never forget where I came from and the hardships people live with back home. Living in both the U.S. and Mexico has given me the tools to understand what privilege is and know the potential I have to make a change in the world.
I have been fortunate enough to have traveled to various countries around the world, some rich and some very poor. In every country, I would find similarities between the new places I was exploring and the culture I was familiar with back home. As I traveled, I realized that no matter how different people’s beliefs and traditions are, there are always similarities because we are all part of the same world. We all share the same laughter, tears, joy, and pain. We are all human, and as humans we share the responsibility to look out for each other and take care of the earth we live in. When I learned about Plant With Purpose, I immediately knew I wanted to be part of an organization that understands the connection between people and the environment. I agree with Plant With Purpose’s philosophy that it is our responsibility to help restore harmony between man and nature. Everyday I work toward developing a better connection with the earth and I am excited to work for an organization that shares the same values as I do.
SYDNEY LIMOND – PROGRAMS
As a San Diego native, I’m happy to be back in my home city for the summer and am excited to be working with Milmer as the programs intern.
I spend the majority of the year living in Colorado and studying Environmental Science at the University of Denver. My minors in Math and Business Analytics have developed my love for working with data, which I hope to put to good use this summer! I am passionate about incorporating sustainability into human society and promulgating environmental stewardship. I hope to land a career in sustainability consulting after I graduate this coming spring.
The programs internship is exactly the type of experience I was looking for this summer. It’s perfect for me because it combines what I love — data analytics, sustainability, and faith. I am excited to join the friendly and motivated Plant With Purpose community. I’m so thankful to be working with Plant with Purpose and am excited to gain knowledge about sustainable development in environmentally degraded countries. I only hope that I can contribute to this organization as I learn and grow!
