As the Outreach Coordinator, Kirstie supports the development team in storytelling, marketing, fundraising, and volunteer activities. She works to cultivate community and church partnerships, and to raise Plant With Purpose’s visibility through communication and outreach initiatives. She’s also the point person for volunteers, so get in touch if you’d like to become involved with our work!

1. Job title?

Outreach Coordinator

2. How long you’ve worked at Plant With Purpose?

June 31, 2015 (I remembered that day!)

3. Favorite tree?Apple Photo

Apple Tree…duh! I am the daughter of an apple enthusiast, so naturally I have a “healthy” obsession. You can experience the seasons with an apple tree, yes even in California. Apple blossoms are quite the sight, and even more sensual when they turn into mouth-watering fruit. I eat an apple a day, and not because the doctor prescribed it. My family has a bookshelf dedicated to apple literature; apple varieties, apple history, even apple stories. One time I almost rolled down our entire hillside, and half-way down an old apple tree saved my life, need I say more?

5. Place in the world that gives you the most joy?

The beach, specifically Strands Beach at home in Dana Point in the company of friends and family. I am filled with joy at any coastline, but frolicking in the waves and drying up on the sand at Strands, the joy bubbles over. I have probably spent as much time at Strands as I have sitting in a classroom or an office. I consider myself blessed. There are so many places that leave me in awe of God’s artistry, but Strands Beach is one that never ever disappoints.

6. Your greatest Plant With Purpose adventure?

I have not visited our programs abroad yet, but navigating San Diego community events can be quite exciting. In my short time at Plant With Purpose I have visited over 30 churches, popped into a few schools, and attended several fairs and events. Balboa Park Earth Fair, the largest free environmental fair in the world, is always a hoot. Explaining Plant With Purpose’s mission to people of many walks of life is challenging and invigorating. This year I was able to talk to a few local radio stations, and explain our program completely in Spanish!

7. Describe Plant With Purpose in 4 words:

Compassionate, Effective, Inspiring, Humble

8. What inspires you to do what you do every day?

When people ask me where I work, I respond with “do you want the long version or the short version?” I could just go on and on. Everyday I wake up almost in disbelief that I get to collaborate with an amazing group of individuals to bring hope and mobility to some of the least fortunate people in the world. Who needs coffee? One of my tasks at Plant With Purpose is to take our partner’s raw testimonies, translate them, and express them as stories to supporters. Against so many odds, our program is enabling families to thrive. The impacts excite me more and more everyday.

8.What is your call to action for fellow tree lovers?

Oh boy. Pick me! I am sure you have all seen and engaged with our posts over the past few weeks. If not, I encourage you to help partnering families plant 5,000 new trees. We formally celebrated Earth Day on April 22, but everyday is Earth Day! Go outside, plant a seedling, hug a tree, gosh darn eat an apple, but don’t forget about our partnering farmers who truly feel the impact of every tree donated. One dollar equals one tree. Now that is something you can feel good about.

  1. OK. I UNDERSTAND THAT I MAY BE A LITTLE BIASED BEING THE THANKFUL DAD OF THIS PLANT WITH PURPOSE OUTREACH COORDINATOR. BUT AFTER READING THAT WHO WOULD NOT WANT TO BE INVOLVED IN SOME WAY WITH THIS FINE ORGANIZATION.? THIS IS THE STUFF THAT HOPE AND FAITH IN OUR FUTURE ARE MADE OF AND I PRAY THAT GOD CONTINUES TO BLESS THEIR EFFORTS.

    SINCERELY,

    DR. DOUG
