Donna

In May, we’ve highlighted the women of Plant With Purpose who anchor their families and communities. For our final post this month, we want to introduce you to our newest San Diego team member, Donna Lebert. Donna is taking on a variety of responsibilities including being the first to say hello when you call or stop by the office. Welcome Donna!

Hi! My name is Donna Lebert and I recently joined the staff at Plant With Purpose as executive assistant. I have only been in the office a few days but feel as though I have returned “home.”

My journey to arrive here began when I graduated from the University of California, Davis in 1980. I had written my major in Environmental Policy Analysis and Planning with an eagerness to work in a field I felt so strongly about. I interned briefly with the Bureau of Land Management prior to moving to South Lake Tahoe to find employment. When I met my husband-to-be in Tahoe, my dream of pursuing a career in the environmental field took a detour. My love of travel and the fact that my fiancé worked aboard a cruise ship altered my employment path. For the next 5 years, I worked aboard ships sailing around the world.

It was through my travels that I was exposed to many areas of the world that were in desperate need of aid. God blessed me with a hunger and a servant’s heart to try and make a difference in the lives of people suffering from poverty. While cruising the Mexican Riviera, I had the opportunity to become involved with a girls’ orphanage in Mazatlan, Mexico. I helped organize efforts among the crew to raise money to buy food and basic supplies for the orphanage. We also arranged to bring the girls aboard the ship to share in the joy of Christmas and showered them with much needed clothing and toys. For many of the girls, it was the first time they received something they could call their own.

My involvement with the girls’ orphanage was just the start of volunteer activities. When I left employment with the cruise lines to settle down and begin a family in San Diego, I continued with volunteering through church and other nonprofit organizations. I found myself serving as a Bible study leader, Sunday School teacher, Girl Scout leader, and became involved in fundraising to build a girls’ school in Idah, Nigeria. I have been married for 27 years to a wonderful husband and we are blessed with a son and daughter who are both amazing individuals.

So now, you can understand why it is that I say I’ve come “home” to Plant With Purpose. The organization is an intersection of my love for the Lord, my love for His creation, and my love to help others. I feel blessed and honored to work with such a dedicated and talented group of believers who are focused on such an amazing mission. When I am not “home” you can usually find me hiking on the trails of Torrey Pines Reserve, one of my favorite spots in San Diego.
