THE NEED

Seventy percent of the world’s poorest people live in rural areas and depend on the land for survival. Yet due to environmental degradation, the land no longer produces enough. Parents struggle to put food on the table, cover healthcare costs, and send their children to school.

Farming families in the Dominican Republic are no exception. In fact, 56 percent of people in rural Dominican communities live below the poverty line (CIA World Factbook). While the country is becoming wealthier, the ever-increasing gap between the rich and poor leaves the poorest half of Dominicans receiving less than 20 percent of the country’s income.

In response to the needs in rural Dominican Republic, Plant With Purpose and Waterstone Community Church are using an integrated, holistic approach to community development that addresses three facets of poverty: spiritual, economic, and environmental. Over the last several years, Waterstone Community Church has come alongside the community of La Joya to develop local leadership, create economic opportunity for farming families, restore the land, and increase food security through sustainable agricultural training. Village sponsorship helps Plant With Purpose reach additional communities and families.
